An Afternoon at Crosby

£100.00

Cost: £100

Date: Sunday 9th November

Time: 2-5pm

On the coast just north of Liverpool lies Crosby Beach, a place that has become both a local landmark and a world-renowned site for art and photography. Stretching for miles with sweeping views over the Irish Sea, Crosby is home to Antony Gormley’s iconic installation, Another Place.

This extraordinary work consists of 100 cast-iron figures, all life-sized moulds of the artist’s own body, spread out across the beach and facing the horizon. Depending on the tide, some stand fully revealed while others are half-buried, their shapes emerging or disappearing as the sea comes and goes. It’s a haunting, powerful sight — one that seems to change every minute with the shifting light, weather, and water. For photographers, the combination of human form, vast skies, reflective wet sand, and tidal rhythms offers an endless playground for creativity.

As you can see from the images in this edition, I also visited Crosby recently and spent time experimenting with multiple exposure techniques in this unique setting. The figures gave me a strong anchor while I layered textures, colours, and movements, and I loved the variety of results. I’ve always admired Another Place, and to photograph it in such a personal way was a real joy.

Janina will be teaching techniques such as in focus and out of focus, moving the camera to subtly change the scene, using the bokeh from the water and exploring using different white balances and blend modes (don’t worry if your camera doesn’t have different blend modes - you will still be able to get some amazing and unique images)

Due to the amount of models out there I cannot take responsibility for if your camera will do multiple exposure images, you will need to find this out for yourself. Most camera brands (with the notable exception of recent Sony models) do some form of in camera multiple exposure. I suggest that if you don’t know if your camera does or not that you simply google the brand and multiple exposure settings. It doesn’t matter, however, how many images it takes or how many blend modes there are, you can learn all the creative techniques on this workshop!

Due to the nature of delivering quality instruction I will be limiting this workshop to 6 participants.
